There are about 500 known species of passionflower. This family of plants is also known as Passiflora. Studies suggest that certain species may have medicinal benefits that may treat anxiety and insomnia.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), today, passionflower is commonly used as a dietary supplement for anxiety, sleep problems, pain, heart rhythm problems, menopausal symptoms, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.
